Rhinodrilus alatus – literally “earthworm with a nose and wings,” popularly known as Minhocuçu, a term that combines the Portuguese word “minhoca” (earthworm) with the Tupi suffix “usu,” meaning “giant,” or “giant earthworm.” Found primarily in the central region of Minas Gerais, Brazil, this species is threatened by environmental changes caused by human activities. For nearly a century, dozens of families have relied on the sustainable harvesting of this animal as their main source of income, through its commercialization as fishing bait.
Its long history of use and continued presence in transformed landscapes reveal the species’ remarkable strength and resilience.

Leonardo and Lucas have collaborated at Limão Capeta Filmes for the past nine years. During this time, they co-wrote and edited the short films “Quando é La Fora” (2017) and “Super Estrela Prateada” (2018) with Leo also directing and Lucas also serving as cinematographer. Minhocuçu marks their first co-directed short film.
