FIRES AND FASCISM

Pete Knapp

An inspirational documentary showing how European communities are responding to wildfires. From eucalyptus plantations to mafia wind farms across four countries, it shows how fascist histories, organised crime, and capitalism are feeding these fires, and how nature and community are parts of the solution. Sinopse: FIRES AND FASCISM is a new 57-min documentary that shows the wildfires in Europe are more than just climate change and mismanagement. It links the increasing wildfires of Europe with fascism, big business, organised crime, and the rise of the far right. It showcases how communities are engaging in direct action, protest, rewilding, and suppressing the rise of uncontrollable fires and the far right through direct actions. Featured are the experiences and actions of 25 people from Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, including scientists, teachers, artists, gardeners, engineers, winemakers, NGOs, and authors. The film is crowdfunded, independent, and non-profit. The director of the film, Dr Pete Knapp will be joining us for a Q&A after the film! Dr Knapp has a background in air quality and shifted careers from academia to storytelling. The reason for making the film is to reduce modern day fascism and to help unify people in times of growing division. It aims to start the conversation on what we need to do about the rise of fascism today. The film is currently on a tour of the UK with 100 screenings. Pete Knapp will be attending each screening to discuss the film and how it links to local community.

CINEMA UNDER DEBATE

In addition to the films competing in the different competitive sections, CineEco also programs works that complement the discussion around pressing environmental issues, such as the debate sessions attended by filmmakers and other guests from the field. This year, there are four documentaries that propose to re-dimension the idea of landscape, be it wilderness, water and energy or culture.
