Project Details

We took a TXILUF! (which means “dive” in Creole) into the rural world of the municipality of Porto Novo — Santo Antão Island, whose mountains and rurality we consider to be Natural and Intangible Heritage that should be valued and preserved. The TXILUF! project, developed by the OLHO LARGO Association, organised a range of workshops, including children’s and young people’s literature, drawing, photography and animation filmmaking, in the decentralised primary schools of Porto Novo. In this context, within rural communities, artistic practices take on an even greater significance, functioning simultaneously as a pedagogical tool and as a means of transmitting and preserving the Island’s intangible and natural heritage. The children from these communities build their knowledge through their everyday experiences, deeply rooted in their relationship with the land, agricultural cycles, local biodiversity and traditional forms of community organisation. The animated short films are one of the outcomes of an intense immersion in these rural realities: the way children understand their geographical and social surroundings, express their concerns about the environment and, in their own unique way, tell and show us about the context in which they live their everyday lives.
